Nose:
Rich, sweet and fruity with distinct initial aromas of dark dried fruits and muscovado sugar – think of raisins, sultanas and candied orange peel especially. Then comes further fruitiness in the form of ripe peach and apricot, plus some milk chocolate and a creamy nuttiness. This is reminiscent of hazelnut praline and brazil nuts. Underneath are hints of marzipan, cocoa powder, molasses and black treacle, plus a pinch of powdered ginger.
Taste:
Fruity and sweet with a spicy edge. This whisky feels velvety and creamy in the mouth with initial dried fruit notes dominating, plus some vanilla custard and dark toffee. Milk chocolate coated raisins and Cognac-soaked prunes are to the fore and sit alongside plump juicy sultanas and candied orange. Crumbly muscovado sugar and a hint of molasses add depth to the sweetness.
The nuttiness from the nose takes time to develop and is again reminiscent of hazelnut praline and brazils, but with hints of toasted walnut and almond. More milk chocolate also comes through nicely, as does a hint of golden syrup. This is balanced by a developing warming woody and peppery spice – think of cinnamon, gingerbread and white pepper. The wood also adds a late tannic dryness.
Finish:
The finish is long and becomes increasingly drying and woody, especially towards the end. The golden syrup, muscovado and dried fruity characteristics linger superbly. As this sweetness slowly fades the woody spices begin to take hold and add a mouthwatering warmth and dryness. The ABV power also helps to extend the finish and offers great balance.
